Nail breakage & repair
Causes of broken nails and what a studio can do about it.
Nails break when the structure cannot withstand the load. Common causes are an enhancement built too thin or incorrectly, a badly placed apex, an overly long shape, lack of moisture or simply a knock.
Repair in the studio:
Smaller cracks can be stabilised with gel and sometimes silk or fibreglass. For larger breaks the nail is rebuilt. It matters to identify the cause – otherwise the break repeats on the same finger.
Prevention:
Choose a realistic length, use cuticle oil daily, wear gloves for cleaning and do not use nails as tools. Regular refills at the right interval stop the structure going out of balance.
